The Forest of Arden Lodge held its January Regular Meeting on 15th January 2025, which was a white table evening, to which non masons are invited.
There were 66 people in attendance, to watch a very special charity event.
The Lodge has had a fantastic year under the Mastership of Gary Caldicott, who assumed the Chair in February 2024. Through a number of social events and collections at the Festive board, up to the start of this evening, the Lodge has raised £9,444 in the cause of various charities, including the Birmingham Children’s Hospital, the RNLI and Fast Aid.
Gary and the Lodge had an idea that £10,000 was within reach.
After a short meeting in which W.Bro Bill Davies was elected to succeed Gary in the Chair, the Lodge room was opened, and our gusts filed in to witness the culmination of Gary’s year as Master take place.
For over 2 ½ years, one of our Brethren, Bro Ashleigh Gwilliam, has been growing his hair for a very worthy cause, the Little Princess Trust, a charity whose aim is to provide care, support and wigs for children and young people who have lost their own hair due to cancer treatments and other conditions. As the Lodge Room filled almost to capacity, Bro Ashleigh took a seat in the centre of the room, and Mr Nick “the Cip” Kreuter, a local barber based in Hall Green, gently removed his flowing locks so that they could be turned into a wig.
While Ashleigh was shorn, the Lodge Almoner, W.Bro Stuart Jenkins gave an impassioned talk on Masonic Charity, and explained that the cost of making the wig was around £700, and called on those present to assist by contributing into the Lodge Relief Chest.
During the Festive Board, Brethren and Visitors were seen eagerly scanning QR codes. A count was made, and a conservative estimate indicated a successful collection of £2250 to which a good amount of Gift Aid will be applied!
In an entirely unexpected twist, W.Bro Steve Warren, IPM of Quarry Lodge No 7543 who meet at Kings Heath announced to all those present, that Bro Ashleigh, in a somewhat rash move, had wagered W.Bro Steve the sum of £600 for the Charity, if he had Ashleigh’s name tattooed on his body. W.Bro Steve revealed to all, an almost foot long tattoo on his side reading “Ash G” and claimed the £600 for the charity, adding that the tattooist had refused payment for his artistry but asked that the cost be also added to the fund. Ashleigh fulfilled his obligation, adding £680 to the fund. Total for the evening so far, £2930!
This was not all, however. A raffle was held in honour of Gary’s year, with proceeds to go to Girl Guiding, as Gary’s daughter, Shannon, is a volunteer Guide Leader. The raffle resulted in a further contribution of £475!
Posting on Facebook this morning, Bro Ashleigh said “This is a charity very close to my heart, I have many personal reasons for caring about this charity that I have not fully shared, but I think every single one of us has experienced the horrible effects of cancer, either personally or through loved ones.
One of the worst things about cancer, is the cure, causing hair loss amongst other side effects.
It’s a harrowing experience for anyone, but imagine a child having to deal with that.
So, I have a very cold head today, while the donation of hair was important, this was always about the money for me.”
W.Bro Stuart said “I have always been proud of this, my Mother Lodge, but in all my 32 years of membership, I cannot recall a group of Masons who better epitomise the founding principle of Freemasonry – Charity. W.Bro Gary has led the lodge this year with quiet confidence, and events such as these have been magnificent. Young Ashleigh is a shining example to the other young Brethren in his generosity, kindness and wit, and together with a growing number of light blues, we are confident of the future of our Lodge. To raise over £12,000 in a year for a Lodge with around 30 members, is exceptional, and I am immensely impressed with the young masons we have in the Lodge”
Following a most successful Ladies Night in October, the Lodge is proud to support a local charity, FastAid Birmingham and Solihull.
FastAid provides Community First Responders in conjunction with West Midlands Ambulance service, who volunteer their time to respond to the most serious 999 calls in their local vicinity.
Pictured above, the Worshipful Master, W.Bro Gary Caldicott, accompanied by Almoner Stuart Jenkins, present a cheque for £2000 to Mr Richard Jay, Chairman of FastAid. Richard said "We are most grateful for this generous donation which will go a long way in helping us to continue our work."
"Gary commented "These people are super-heroes"
Sunday 10th of November 2024 saw members of the Forest of Arden Lodge No 3826 representing Knowle Freemasons at Knowle Remembrance Parade. Picture L-R W.Bro Kevin Kane-Brooks, W.Bro Tim Watson, W.Bro Stuart Jenkins and Bro Christian Turigel.
This long standing tradition of the Lodge was enjoyed by those present, even though W.Bro Kevin cannot march in any way recognised by veterans or servicemen!

For the first time in 10 years, the Forest of Arden Lodge held a Ladies Festival at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Solihull.
This gala occasion was attended by nearly 100 guests, and a raffle and Auction realised the sum of £1170, which will be donated to FastAid, the local ambulance first response charity.
The evening was enjoyed by all, and next year's master was heard to say "How am I going to follow this?"
Seven members of the Forest of Arden Lodge No 3826 plus 2 willing volunteers today abseiled over 7 stories at the Custard Factory in Digbeth, Birmingham, in aid of Birmingham Children's Hospital. The team raised £2363 as part of a day long effort involving 84 people in a number of groups.
The day itself raised almost £30,000.
Our team smashed its target of £1700, and the team were delighted and exhilarated ate the result, and accordingly headed straight to the pub to celebrate. You will be pleased to hear that no-one was hurt (or vomited) during this wonderful event!

At a recent Black Country Tapas event held by the Brethren of Forest of Arden Lodge No 3826, much merriment ensued, good food was eaten, many drinks were consumed, and in the finest tradition of Masonic Charity, a collection was held. Lodge members and their families were kind enough to donate, and a sum of £300 was raised. This was the first occasion the Lodge Relief Chest was used.
Pictured here are the Worshipful Master Gary Caldicott, Mr Nick Woodman and W.Bro Stuart Jenkins, Almoner, as the cheque was presented.
Mr Woodman came to represent the Oasis Mental Health Charity (formerly Solihull Mind). Oasis has a piece of land located in Knowle that is used to help their clients use activities such as gardening and conservation projects as part of their therapy.
W.Bro Gary Caldicott, Master, said “we set out at the start of our year to do whatever we can to help local charities, and Oasis represents a great opportunity for us to donate to a worthy local cause”.
Mr Woodman said “We are very grateful to the Forest of Arden Lodge for this donation, and will use it well within our creative space at Knowle”.
W.Bro Jenkins also commented “This was the first use of our Relief Chest, and as Almoner I found the process easy to use, and of course the additional contribution from HMRC is always very useful!”.
Saturday 17th August saw members of the Lodge, friends and family members join together at Dr Eamer's Distillery in Brierley Hill for an afternoon of drinks, food and companionship.
The menu, described by the Worshipful Master Gary Caldicott as "A bostin bit of fittle darn bar the cut" was traditional Black Country Tapas - including Scotch Eggs, Black Pudding, Pork Pie etc. Plentiful Gin, Rum and Prosecco was on tap, and a raffle took place, from which £300 will be donated to Oasis Mental Health Charity based in Solihull
Last month we held our inaugural annual Forest of Arden Lodge Golf Challenge Day! Our WM, SW, and JW were all in attendance along with many other lodge members, a couple of our favourite P.I.G.s (Permanently Invited Guests), and a very special Lady!
This was followed by a very merry curry and plenty of drinks.
Great fun was had by all and a magnificent £310.00 was raised for charity.
The younger brethren took home the trophies this year so the more senior brethren will be looking for revenge in 2025
Members of the Forest of Arden Lodge assisted in the community recently, by acting as marshals for this popular event.
Held annually in May, the run attracts as many as 1200 runners, and is organised by Knowle and Dorridge Lions.
We assisted on behalf of Meningitis Now, a charity we have supported before. Our contact on the day, Angela Cloke, works tirelessly for this charity, and asked us if we could help out with a few bodies, and we were delighted to oblige. In return, Angela provided us with delicious cake, and one of the Brethren, Iain Denton, provided some delicious ginger beer to wash it down with.
UPDATE 18/6/2024, we are advised that Knowle and Dorridge Lions donated £5,000 to meningitis now following the fun run!
